As a licensed auctioneer, I have often been asked this question. ‘Why should people go for auctions?’ I think the answer is very clear. Assets that go under auction is just another potential investment for everyone.If the price of the asset in the auction is higher than the market, then the item would not go to the auction because it would be a waste of time. This is why we could always find VALUE in auctions. I have personally seen good properties bought by investors, refurbished and sold with a profit many months down the road. I have personally witnessed some rare Peranakan item being bidded above its reserve price because the item was very rare and it completes a certain collection for some avid collectors.
Auction is also a place for sellers to really understand the value of their collection. Selling direct usually means the buyer would do his best to push the price down as much as possible.
