Rose pink carries connotation of happiness and longevity, youthfulness and innocence. The invention of the rose pink enamel was one of the great innovations in the history of polychrome, painting in Chinese porcelain.

EXTREMELY RARE STRAITS CHINESE PINK GROUND PEONY FLORIAL KWA CHEE BOX aka SWEET MEAT BOX

Hong Xian Period (Jan to Mar 1916). Early Republic

Dimension: Rim width 18.3cm, Height 9cm

A rare pink ground kwa chee box aka sweet meat container decorated with peony sprays with matching dome lid cover. The inside of the kwa chee box is divided into four segmented compartments surrounding the central circular one. These boxes are traditionally used for keeping melon seeds and other sweet offerings. Kwa chee boxes are taken out during special occasions such as weddings, birthdays and Chinese New Year.

The based and interior of the cover flange is affixed with a Hong Xian mark, a very rare mark due to the very brief reign of Hong Xian (100 days). The Empire of China was a short-lived attempt by statesman and general Yuan Shikai from late 1915 to early 1916 to reinstate monarchy in China, with himself as the Hong Xian Emperor.

An exquisite item for every discerning collector.

No visible material defects, only slight wear, commensurate with its age and utilitarian usage.

EXTREMELY RARE STRAITS CHINESE NYONYA PINK GROUND GARLIC-HEAD-SHAPED VASE

Late Qing Dynasty

Dimension: Height 35cm, body width 25.5cm

An extremely rare Vase form among the repertoire of Straits Chinese porcelain. Most Straits Chinese vases are elongated ovoid shape with four 2 lion dogs on the neck and four dragons on the shoulder. However, the featured vase has globular body and a long, thin neck tapering outwards as such similar to a flange opening.

The main body in bright pink enamels and two ogival medallions in reserved bright yellow enamels. Each ogival enclosing a magnificent phoenix standing among peony foliage. The vase’s opening rim exterior and interior border decorated in bright yellow enamels and surrounded with the Buddhist symbols.

In Ho Wing Meng’s book, “Straits Chinese Porcelain: A Collector’s Guide”, page 99 he made references to the existence of unusual vase forms.

The fine artwork is typical of late Guangxu commissioned pieces. A rare and exquisite museum quality piece.  No material defects and condition commensurate with age. This exquisite piece was authenticated by Chen Run Min (read more), the renown porcelain unit director of the Palace Museum of Beijing during his visit in November 2019.

Very good. No material defects identified. Commensurate with age. Matching cover
