Just a week ago, MNP Auctioneers (Central) Sdn Bhd concluded the Straits Chinese Antique Auction (SCAA) Series 2/2017 which saw a tremendous turnout. During the 4 days of the exhibition of all the antiques, our team was swamped with the usual collectors as well as curious onlookers. The usual comments from the collectors? “Wah, the reserve price is so low, where did you get these items?” As for the curious onlookers, these are quite typical, “Wah, one plate can beRM2,500? Who will buy?”
Let me share briefly, the Peranakan antique market is a vibrant one because of changing generations. Sometimes, the younger generation may not understand the significance of such items and may prefer to turn them into cash which they can use for other things. However, there are collectors who understood the significance and the rarity of such items. That is why the transactions for these items continue to grow. As for the question of “Wah, one plate can be RM4,800? Who will buy?” Anyways, that particular plate was sold for RM8,000. which was close to a 66 percent higher than its starting price. Take a look at the image.
Very rare yellow base plate embellished by a pale-apricot border with 宣统年制 reign marks. Standing phoenix posing among the blooming peony and leaf. 1 plate at 19.8cm wide, 1 sauce dish at 11.2cm wide. Crafted in the early 20th Century (20 世纪初，清宣统).
Let me also share another significant item which had a reserve price of RM15,000, a 20th Century Lime Green Goldfish Bowl, which was sold for RM40,000 an astonishing 267 percent higher.
Rare lime green base, huge gold fish bowl featuring mandarin ducks swimming in the lotus pond. The reverse featuring pheasant and peonies interior featuring seven gold fishes and water weeds. The gold fish represents wealth and abundance. 35.5cm tall and 41cm wide this item is in very good condition made in the early 20th Century (20 世纪初).
As an auctioneer for the past 13 years, I can safely assure you that the asset investment market, whether its antiques or banknotes or even other rare items, are growing in demand. In fact, Malaysia is considered a laggard for these because in many advanced markets, asset auctions are already a common weekly event.
