DISCERNING visitors had the pick of fine items during the International Luxury Collections Week 2018 at Gurney Paragon Mall, Penang.
Exhibitors showcased sparkling jewellery, posh vehicles, handmade carpets, genuine antiques, artworks and even property.
The three-day event at the shopping centre’s atrium included a grand auction hosted by MNP Auctioneers.
Exquisite Nyonya ware, Japanese porcelain, Chinese figurines, art pieces and jewellery went for tidy sums as collectors vied for ownership.
There was also a public forum titled ‘Collecting and Investing in Malaysian Art’ delivered by master framer and Pinkguy gallery founder Winson Loh.
Another session saw Malaysia Numismatic Society committee member and banknote authentication specialist Cho Chun Loong speaking on old notes.
Visitors also enjoyed a jewellery show presented by Venessa Diamond during the event organised by CHTNetwork.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, founder Ch’ng Huck Theng said the event’s second edition followed a successful debut last year.
“This can be a new high-end tourism product for Penang, catering to those who seek endless adventure and unrivalled luxury.
“We believe in connecting beautiful people with quality products,” Ch’ng commented.
He saw a need for Penang to have such offerings to tap into the international market of affluent travellers.
State Tourism Development, Heritage, Culture and Arts Committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin echoed those sentiments.
“Not enough attention is given to Penang’s premium services. The state provides many luxurious experiences such as wellness and golfing holidays, duty-free shopping and even helicopter tours.
“Moreover, we have direct flights from Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Vietnam and Qatar that bring in affluent tourists.”
Joining Yeoh for the opening were Hunza Group executive director Khor Tze Ming, Penang Global Tourism CEO Ooi Chok Yan and Malaysian Association of Hotels Penang chapter chairman Khoo Boo Lim.
